Counting the Omer begins on the second day of Passover when the Israelites left Egypt, and spans the 49 days until they receive Torah on Shavuot. This deck provides 49 days of innovative prayers that align with seven of the ten sefirot on the Kabbalistic Tree of Life. Over the seven weeks of counting the omer, there is a weekly and a daily sefira. Each week of the Omer focuses on a facet of the Divine Mystery, while each day has its own and together they provide expansive opportunities for contemplation.
Why I created Prayers for a Free Soul
As an artist and ritualist, it is my mission to provide inspirational tools to help people connect to their Judaism through a deeply spiritual, Earth-based, embodied approach. I began counting the Omer during Covid in 2020 and found the practice deeply nourishing. I went looking for a meaningful and fulfilling Omer practice that connected to the Kabbalistic Tree of Life and didn’t find one. So I made one! In 2023 I made 49 pieces of art based on each of the daily attributes and the response to the images that I shared encouraged me to develop this deck.
Counting the Omer takes many forms. Prayers for a Free Soul offers individual prayers centering on the weekly sefira and its daily attribute. How you use the deck is up to you. Meditate on the art, spend time contemplating the daily prayer or recite the traditional prayer daily. Come to it one day a week or every day. You are a free person so follow your heart as you interact with the deck. You may want to display your card to remind you of the daily prayer.
